Monochrome striped contemporary artistic table lamp

Mario Botta designed the Shogun lamp for Artemide in 1986 at the height of Italian design's most self-assured decade, and he brought to it the full authority of an architect who had spent a career thinking about what buildings owe to the people inside them. This piece draws directly from that formal intelligence. The base is a bold cylindrical column wrapped in alternating bands of black and white stripes that would read as decorative on any other object but here function as something closer to structural notation, a visual rhythm that gives the column weight and presence without adding a single gram of material. Above it, two curved perforated metal panels arc into a barrel-vaulted dome shade, their geometric mesh filtering the internal light source into a fine pattern of warm lines that falls across surrounding surfaces like the shadow of a venetian blind at golden hour. The two panels are independently adjustable, sliding on their brass pin mounts to open or close the shade and direct or diffuse the light, a mechanical gesture that makes the act of adjusting the lamp a deliberate, satisfying interaction rather than an afterthought. When fully closed the shade is a sculptural object of severe beauty; when opened it becomes a lantern, warm and generous. At 58 centimetres tall it commands any surface it occupies,a desk, a console, a generous bedside table, with the unambiguous authority of an object that knows exactly what it is.
