Memphis organic "sprout" table lamp

There are objects that perform their function and objects that perform joy, this lamp does both without apology. From a chunky cylindrical base in matte blush pink, two lacquered metal stems, one red, one yellow, twist upward in a double helix that is equal parts botanical illustration and Memphis design manifesto. The stems spiral around each other as they rise, diverging near the top into two independent branches, each terminating in a small cylindrical bulb holder cradling an exposed opal globe that glows with warm, unmediated light. No shade, no diffuser, no attempt to conceal: the bulbs are the object's punctuation, the moment where all that kinetic upward energy resolves into illumination. Founded by Ettore Sottsass as a deliberate act of resistance against the tyranny of good taste, the Memphis movement gave designers permission to treat colour and form as sources of genuine pleasure, this lamp is that permission fully exercised. At 50 centimetres tall it has presence without domination, bringing the particular warmth that only a joyful object in a room can provide.
