Bauhaus "Mesa redonda round" coffee table

In 1971 Oscar Niemeyer, the architect whose sinuous concrete forms had already redefined what a building could feel like, designed the Mesa Redonda for Casa das Canoas, his personal residence nestled in the forest of Rio de Janeiro. This coffee table pays tribute to that act of domestic design with the same formal conviction that defined Niemeyer's entire architectural career. Three sweeping concave steel blades rise from broad flat bases and curve inward with the fluid grace of a bird's wing or the petal of a tropical flower, meeting at a central point beneath a generous round timber top whose natural grain speaks of warmth, craft and the honest beauty of organic material. The second variant presents the same architectural base beneath a deeply cerused dark wood top, its grain highlighted in silver against near-black timber, creating a surface of extraordinary tonal complexity that shifts between wood and drawing depending on the light.
