Mid century brass bankers table lamp

In 1909 American engineer Harrison D. McFaddin patented the Emeralite banker's lamp, combining a heavy brass base with a hand-blown green glass shade engineered specifically to combat eyestrain, the emerald green casing filtering harsh incandescent light into a calm, directed glow that financial institutions purchased in vast quantities, cementing the green shade as a symbol of focused intelligence and serious work. In 2013 designer Ron Gilad reinterpreted that archetype for Flos as the Goldman lamp, stripping the form to its essential geometry while preserving every ounce of its original authority. This table lamp honours that century-long lineage with a composition of complete formal resolution. A slender polished brass stem rises from a flat rectangular base to support a wide flat rectangular shade in vivid emerald green, its underside directing a focused pool of warm LED light onto the surface below while the brass finial above completes the symmetrical T-form with the precision of a technical drawing. The vivid green of the shade, psychologically associated with concentration, calm and intellectual rigour since McFaddin's original patent, makes this as much a statement about how one works as how one lights a room. Available in emerald green and matte black, each colourway carries the same formal intelligence with a different atmospheric character.
