Description

In 1956 Eero Saarinen, troubled by what he called "the slum of legs" beneath conventional tables and chairs, designed the Tulip table as a solution of radical formal elegance: a single continuous pedestal rising from a flat circular base through a sinuous narrowing waist to support a generous round top, the entire structure finished in a single unbroken white so that base and surface read as one resolved sculptural form. Introduced to the market between 1957 and 1958 through his collaboration with the prominent American furniture manufacturer Knoll, it immediately became one of the most recognisable and enduring objects in the history of mid-century modern design. This dining table honours that legacy with complete fidelity to its founding vision. The high-gloss white finish, applied uniformly across the smooth circular top and the continuous tulip pedestal, gives the piece the luminous precision of a sculpture rather than a piece of furniture, its form casting the most elegant shadow in any room it occupies. At 107 × 73 cm it seats four with generous ease, bringing the Space Age optimism and formal clarity of Saarinen's original proposition to the contemporary dining room, the kitchen, or the studio.
