Description

On 4 October 1957 the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, a polished metal sphere bristling with protruding antennae, into low Earth orbit and in doing so provided the mid-century design world with one of its most enduring formal inspirations. This chandelier translates that iconic orbital silhouette into a composition of complete sculptural authority. A deep terracotta red lacquered sphere at the centre radiates four tapered arms outward at dynamic asymmetric angles, each one tipped with a warm vintage Edison filament globe bulb that casts its characteristic amber glow in every direction simultaneously. Two polished chrome elliptical rings orbit the central sphere at intersecting planes, their curved lines evoking both the orbital paths of electrons and the trajectory of the satellite itself, adding a layer of kinetic visual energy that makes the chandelier appear to spin even when completely still. At 50 × 40 cm it commands the ceiling of a dining room, a living room or an entry hall with the confident drama of a piece that understands it is carrying the optimism of an entire era on its arms.
