Bauhaus mushroom orange table lamp

Few objects in the history of twentieth-century design are as immediately recognisable — or as formally satisfying as the mushroom lamp. This piece draws its lineage directly from the Nesso Table Lamp, the internationally recognised masterpiece conceived by Giancarlo Mattioli and the Gruppo Architetti Urbanisti Città Nuova, the Bologna-based collective of architects who created it for Artemide in 1967. The Nesso was not merely a lamp but a provocation: a single continuous form that abolished the boundary between base, stem and shade, collapsing the entire object into one fluid, almost biological gesture. That gesture is preserved here in full. A wide, generously domed shade its surface a high-gloss lacquer that catches and holds light with almost ceramic authority sweeps downward and inward to meet a slender stem that widens again into a flat circular base, the entire silhouette evoking the quiet monumentality of a forest mushroom seen at eye level. In orange, the form is at its most insistent: a colour that belongs equally to the optimism of 1960s Italian Pop and to the warm domestic palette of a contemporary interior. Light exits downward through the open underside of the dome, pooling on the surface below in a warm ambient circle while the shade itself glows from within, its walls diffusing the source into an even, enveloping luminosity. An object that has earned the right to be called timeless by remaining, after more than half a century, entirely contemporary.
